Why we often fail under pressure.

Why we often fail under pressure.

I spoke about this concept with my wife. Stress narrows your focus. Great if you are running from a lion. Bad if you are in the modern world (Unless you are at a zoo… running from a lion) Since you don’t have the “pressure” of instant solution you will end up complicating the problem far beyond reason. Think about how many things we “focus” on as a new driver. It is really really complex. You are traveling in a 2k lb vehicle with enough mass to destroy any human being at any speed above 40 MPH. At the same time you have to judge distances of vehicle, pedestrians, and cyclists. Then read their “body language” to see if they are going to get in front of you without signaling. You have to regulate the flow of gasoline.. the list goes on and on. How do you do it? You broaden your focus. You are taking a step back and looking at a bigger picture. If you are using a magnifying glass understanding a work of art is going to take time but if you take a step back and a moment to take it in… well it becomes clear. We do not do this ourselves. Our creator allows us to do this and is with us in these actions. Fear and worry are for those that don’t trust that we aren’t here to dodge failure and lurking death. Those who believe push with their wills and know, that which created us wants us to do good. For ourselves and for others but never while harming others. So, when I see my wife in a panic I tell her to stop. We have 10 minute and we need 12.. well then let’s take a moment to think about it. Most of the time you find your math is wrong. There are other solutions but you are so focused on a failing one (in your panic) that you cannot see your other options. I often ask our creator “What I am not seeing?” and attempt to understand instead of control. Creativity blossoms and I success more often than not.
